Chōdō Dave Dietrich — Reflection on Practice

  • Santa Barbara Hospice 2050 Alameda Padre Serra Unit 100 Santa Barbara, CA 93103 United States (map)

Chōdō Dave Dietrich

After decades of traversing a number of Western and Eastern spiritual traditions, Dave was introduced to Zen practice in 2012 when he joined a sitting group in Santa Barbara, CA hosted by Tony Johansen, a student of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.

That sitting group eventually evolved into the Santa Barbara Zen Center (SBZC). Dave felt fortunate to practice and study with Sensei Gary Koan Janka at SBZC for a number of years where he was also able to practice with his now teacher Nenzen Pamela Brown. Sensei Nenzen led the Jukai ceremony at Jikoji Zen Center in January of 2024 where Dave received lay ordination, and his Dharma name Chōdō (morning path).

Chōdō Dave continues to practice with SBZC where he currently serves as co-temple manager. He also studies with Sensei Nenzen, the Guiding Teacher at Jikoji Zen Center.
